Marina Diamandis Biography
Marina Lambrini Diamandis, known professionally as MARINA (formerly Marina and the Diamonds), is a Welsh singer-songwriter born on October 10, 1985, in Brynmawr, Wales. Of Greek and Welsh descent, she was raised near Abergavenny in a modest household by her Welsh mother after her parents’ divorce when she was four. Her father, Dimos Diamandis, returned to Greece but occasionally visited. Marina has one elder sister, Lafina. Describing her childhood as “simple and idyllic,” she was a tomboy, often playing football and spending time with boys.
Marina attended Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls, where her music teacher recognized her talent despite her reluctance to join the choir. At 16, she moved to Greece to live with her father, connecting with her heritage and singing Greek folk songs with her grandmother. She earned an International Baccalaureate at St. Catherine’s British Embassy School in Athens before returning to Wales. Driven by a passion for singing, she worked at a petrol station to fund her move to London, where she briefly attended dance school and studied music at the University of East London and Middlesex University, though she left both to pursue music experientially.
Marina began writing songs at 18, initially terrified of public performance. Inspired by self-produced artist Daniel Johnston, she composed her debut EP, Mermaid vs. Sailor (2007), using GarageBand. She gained attention after being spotted by Neon Gold Records’ Derek Davies in 2008, leading to a deal with 679 Recordings. Her debut single, “Obsessions” (2009), and EP The Crown Jewels followed, with her profile rising after placing second in the BBC’s Sound of 2010 poll. Her debut album, The Family Jewels (2010), blending indie pop and new wave, reached number five in the UK and was certified gold, with the single “Hollywood” peaking at number 12.
Her second album, Electra Heart (2012), a concept album exploring female archetypes, became her first UK number-one album, certified gold in both the UK and US, with hits like “Primadonna” and “How to Be a Heartbreaker.” Her third album, Froot (2015), marked her first US Billboard 200 top 10 entry. In 2018, she dropped “and the Diamonds” to perform as MARINA, releasing Love + Fear (2019) and Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land (2021). Her sixth album, Princess of Power (2025), featured singles like “Butterfly” and “Cupid’s Girl.”
Known for her retro fashion and synesthesia, which makes her see musical notes as colors, Marina has a cult following, particularly among the LGBTQ+ community, and is recognized as a gay icon. She was in a relationship with bassist Jack Patterson from 2016 to 2021. With a net worth estimated at $6 million, Marina continues to captivate with her electropop, synth-pop, and art-pop sound, blending introspection with bold pop sensibilities
